Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced that Verso Energy, an integrated energy company focused on producing low-carbon molecules, will deploy Honeywell UOP’s eFining™ methanol-to-jet processing technology to produce electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) at seven planned production sites in France, Finland, and the United States. Honeywell’s advanced technologies and standardized design approach will enable Verso Energy to reduce capital expenses, accelerate time to market, and expand global SAF capacity.
Honeywell’s eFining technology utilizes carbon dioxide from biological sources, renewable power, and hydrogen to produce a range of electrofuels (eFuels), including eSAF. When blended with conventional jet fuel, eSAF serves as a drop-in replacement, requiring no modifications to existing aircraft or fuel infrastructure. It can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 88% compared to traditional jet fuel.1
“Efficient and cost-effective eSAF production is essential for airlines to meet regional adoption mandates,” said Antoine Huard, CEO of Verso Energy. “Honeywell’s proven SAF technology, combined with our standardized design, will allow us to rapidly scale operations and deliver more eSAF to the market, addressing surging global demand.”
Demand for eSAF is expected to grow significantly under the European Union’s ReFuelEU initiative, which mandates at least 35% eSAF in aviation fuel supplies by 2050. Leveraging Honeywell’s technology, Verso Energy aims to produce approximately 200 million gallons of eSAF annually across the seven facilities.
“Honeywell’s innovative SAF portfolio tackles key challenges in renewable fuel production: cost and feedstock availability,” said Barry Glickman, Vice President of Honeywell Low Carbon Energy. “Our eFining technology enables the use of abundant CO2 as feedstock, making eSAF production scalable and less carbon-intensive. Ongoing advancements in our processes are reducing the cost premium of renewables by optimizing plant scale, efficiency, utility use, and project timelines.”
Verso Energy has secured EU Innovation Fund awards for its initial projects, DEZiR and ReSTart, which will be among Europe’s first large-scale facilities dedicated to eSAF. The DEZiR project also receives French government funding and is slated to begin operations in 2030, delivering early eSAF supplies.
Honeywell’s renewable fuels portfolio includes Ecofining™, FT Unicracking™, Biocrude Upgrading, and Ethanol to Jet technologies, offering feedstock flexibility for next-generation fuels.
